It's 8am at Sandspit. The only sounds, the gentle
lapping of an incoming tide and our resident shorebirds.

Experience this wonderful natural beauty while it still exists
—  it may not be in `safe hands` for long.

Independent from any other organisation, SSOSI represents the views of residents concerned about over development
of our local environment. Your Ratepayers organisation has been taken over by supporters of a proposed marina and
they no longer represent the views of all our community.

Environment Court Update January 2012

SSOSI will defend the decision by Rodney District Council Commissioners to reject the Marina Society's application
for a Resource Consent for land based activities in the Environment Court.

Auckland Council will not defend the appeal by the SYC Marina Society and has indicated it is willing to settle the matter by consent. SSOSI now shoulders the responsibility for protecting the Sandspit environment, and preserving the public
interest alone.

SSOSI has received a grant from the Environmental Legal Aid Fund to assist us to fund a properly resourced team to defend the appeal. We have been able to engage the services of a highly reputed team, barrister, a planner, a traffic engineer, a landscape architect and a marine ecologist.

The evidence that will be presented, by expert and lay witnesses, has been circulated to all the parties, and we are confident that we will be able to present a strong case to the Court.

We are expecting the hearing date to commence mid January 2012.

SSOSI thanks the team members who have prepared and will give evidence to the Court for their commitment and the quality of their work. It has been a monumental effort, delivered to tight deadlines.

Did you know that Sandspit is one of the easiest places in the Auckland region to observe shorebirds in their natural environment.

Where else can you watch such a range of birds within 100 metres of a public road and carpark?

We have met visitors from Europe who come every year, for the last 18 years, to enjoy our bird life.

Sandspit is a small place in the global scheme of things but if all small places on the planet are destroyed by inappropriate development there will be no large places that will be worth living in or visiting.
